With GpsGate Server and GpsGate Client on your laptop you have an amazing personal GPS logger! All with free software.
You can install GpsGate Server and GpsGate Client on the same computer to create a great logger for all your GPS tracks!
You will be able to do a lot with the recorded tracks. Display them on Google maps, show them in reports and export them to Google Earth or Excel. Advanced users can query the tracks using SQL.
To follow this guide you will need a GPS, a Windows laptop and the free GpsGate Client and GpsGate Server software. Download the software here.
Setup GpsGate Server
Install GpsGate Server
Unzip the GpsGate Server zip file that you downloaded to a directory on your computer and run Install.exe from that directory. The Install Wizard will guide you through all the steps.
When you click Finish in the first Wizard a browser window will open to take you through the final setup steps.
After the plugin install process the GpsGate Server setup is completed.
Create a tracking application
Follow these steps to create an application on GpsGate Server:
- If you are not already logged in, login to SiteAdmin with the user you just created. You can typically find your SiteAdmin login at http://localhost/gpsgateserver/siteadmin/Index.aspx
- Go to Applications -> Create New
- Enter a “Name” for your application, like Amazing GPS logger and click Next (leave the other settings at their defaults)
- Add an administrator to your application, select Add Existing to use your SiteAdmin user
- Click on Search. Select your SiteAdmin user in the drop down menu and click Next
- Select your Time zone and click Finish (leave the other settings at their defaults)
The application is now created.
Add a user to your application
Click on the “Application URL” for Amazing GPS logger, and login as the SiteAdmin user (the Application URL is found by clicking the application name on the page Applications / Search and Manage in the SiteAdmin application (typically you can login to your applications using the URL http://localhost/gpsgateserver/)
Follow these steps to add a user:
- Select the menu Admin / Users
- Click on Add User
- Enter the following in the Setup user panel:
“Username:” car1 (or another suitable username)
“Name:” Car 1 (or another suitable name)
“Password:” 1234 (or another suitable password, make a note of it)
Leave the other fields empty and click Next - Mark the checkbox _Unit in the Set permissions panel and click Next
- Mark the tag Show on map and click Next
- Click Finish
Click on Map view in the menu to go back to the main page. You can now see your user in the list of vehicles.
This completes the application setup.
Setup GpsGate Client
If you already have GpsGate Client connected to your GPS device go straight to the Configure GpsGate Client section.
Install GpsGate Client
- Connect your GPS device to your computer and turn it on
- Run GpsGateClient.exe on your computer and follow the Setup Wizard
Note: You can access GpsGate Client by clicking the GpsGate Client icon in the System Tray on the desktop.
Configure GpsGate Client
Follow these steps to connect GpsGate Client to GpsGate Server.
- Click on the GpsGate Client icon in the toolbar on the desktop and select Online
- Enter localhost in the “GpsGate Server address:” field and click Next
- Enter “Username” car1 and “Password” 1234 (or the ones you selected) and click Test
- If the test is OK, click Finish. If the test fails, double check the username and password
Login to your Amazing GPS logger application to verify that your GpsGate Client now is connected as Car 1.
Now you can enjoy the great logging capabilities and start exploring additional functionality in GpsGate VehicleTracker!
