Track Android phones with GpsGate
2010-11-28 19:07 by Henrik Guides

Android phones can be used as tracking clients for GpsGate Server with the GPS2GpsGate application available on Android market. In addition to GPS based tracking the application also supports positioning using mobile network cell towers, making it suitable for implementations where GPS signals are not always available.

Install GPS2GpsGate on your Android phone

Purchase and install GPS2GpsGate from Android Market ( use the Market icon on your phone ). Then start the GPS2GpsGate application on your phone and configure the following:

GpsGate Server HostnameGPS2GpsGate

Enter hostname or IP address to your GpsGate Server installation. Use one of the following formats: 123.123.123.123 or yourdomainname.com

For example to connect to the GpsGate Server at online.gpsgate.com you enter: online.gpsgate.com

GpsGate IMEI number
Leave this as the application default. GPS2GpsGate will pick up the phone IMEI automatically.

Note: Write down the IMEI number presented by GPS2GpsGate, you will need it when you configure VehicleTracker in the next step. For users in countries that use MEID (USA for example), GPS2GpsGate automatically converts the MEID to a number in IMEI format.

Time before logging
Enter 60 here to track every minute.

Distance before logging
Enter 50 here to track only when the phone has moved more than 50 meters from it’s last location update.

Leave the other settings at their defaults for now, you can change them later to suit your tracking needs.

Click on Start in the GPS2GpsGate application to start tracking.

Configure your VehicleTracker application

Follow the steps below to configure your VehicleTracker application to listen to data from your Android phone.

  • Add a user to your VehicleTracker application
  • Add a device with a GpsGate TrackerOne device mapper
  • Enter the IMEI number used by the GPS2GpsGate Client on your Android phone in the IMEI field (you do not need to enter a phone number at this stage)
